I have zero confidence in any of the Vaio care or Vaio update software and would prefer to tinker with the drivers myself until I find an actual working solution. That is what caused me the problems in the first place.

I had originally followed the Sony instructions, waited for the go ahead from the Vaio software and done everything exactly as suggested. IMPORTANT: For model-specific information about installing bundled applications, consult the operating instructions supplied with the computer.

That the TV autoupdates to introduce these ads with no reasonable way for a regular person to make them go away, on an expensive TV they bought, is a sucky situation for sure. You may receive this message when trying to open the VAIO Update software. Personally speaking I'd rather land on a stable plateau that allows for a clean home screen display (no ads) and a carefully curated list of apps that update automatically. It makes the TV less of an entertainment display and more of a chore.
This can be annoying if you're not using the TV's built in apps and primarily use an external streaming box, but even if you do use the TV's interface, that's a lot of manual management just to avoid unwanted ads. I've even heard that in some cases the ads eventually return regardless. Once that OS is installed, sure, you can try to delete/disable apps, turn off automatic app updates for all apps, and micromanage to only (manually) update the apps you do want to install, but that's a pain lots of folks don't want to have to bother with. If you go to the Help app > Privacy setting and uncheck "Sony Smart TV services," the TV will be prevented from downloading/installing/offering any new OS updates in the future.Įven when I manually attempt an update now, just to test, I get a pop-up that says "This feature requires your agreement to the Privacy Policy." OK, in that case, I don't agree.
Especially for folks who primarily use an external streaming box or stick, anyway.
It seems to me that the cons outweigh the pros on this one. I am happily on version 8 on my TV and won't upgrade to 9 (and be subjected to its ads and other nonsense) unless there is a compelling reason for me to do so. I'm glad I disabled and prevented AndroidTV software updates before this particular one dropped. Previous unwanted updates messed with my CEC and audio setting on my Bravia, so I've been cautious ever since.
